3-2-1

Things that I learned

  • Imperialism was used by all of Europe.
  • Britain was the strongest imperialist country.
  • Imperialism was Europe being selfish in my opinion.
Things that I found interesting

  • Africa tried to resist Imperialism.
  • The U.S did not partake in Imperialism.
One question I still have

  • Was imperialism really necessary?

Suez Canal Spotlight On

The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Opened in November 1869 after 10 years of construction work, it allows water transportation between Europe and Asia without navigation around Africa. The northern terminus is Port Said and the southern terminus is Port Tawfik at the city of Suez. Ismailia lies on its west bank,  almost 2 mile north of the half-way point.

Uprising in Tunisia

Jews in Tunisia are embracing the recent revolution there and do not fear a turn toward Islamism, a new report says.
Several people died in major confrontations with police on Feb. 25. In the wake of the demonstrations, interim Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi resigned.
According to a report in the German Jewish weekly, Juedische Allgemeine, Tunisia's Jewish community, with about 1,600 members, suffered under the previous repressive regime but also was protected from threats by Islamic extremists. Today, Jewish leaders believe Tunisia's tourism industry and the participation of women in the recent uprising will help guarantee that Islamists will not gain the upper hand there.
Nevertheless there have been reports of anti-Semitic arson attacks in recent weeks; vandals destroyed an entry gate, guard house and Torah scroll at the grave of kabbalist Rabbi Yosef Ma’aravi, a seldom-visited site in central Tunisia, the report said.
But the burning of a large synagogue was part of a larger case of arson, Roger Bismuth, president of the Jewish community in Tunisia, told the Juedische Allgemeine. He said that "other buildings in the area were attacked. The attack was not aimed at the Jewish community, and we are not currently experiencing specific hostilities that would cause concern."
Georges Tibi, director of the Jewish community, reported that a group of Salafists did try to enter a synagogue, "screaming anti-Jewish slogans... However, the army arrived quickly and was on our side."  He said that media and public response was also solidly supportive of the Jewish community.
A blogger, Ftouh Souhail, has criticized these reactions, as typical of the "dhimmi" attitude of being protected and submissive.
Tibi said that he believed Islamists would not gain the upper hand, because "women of all backgrounds took part in demonstrations, fighting for their rights with strength and courage." They remain vigilant, he said. In addition, he noted that the legally sanctioned Tunisian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood renounced violence and insured it would respect human rights and democracy, in the wake of the uprising.
Both Tibi and Bismuth told the Allgemeine that, ultimately, "tourism is much more important than all the excitement over Islamists." They said it was important for Tunisia's economic stability that tourists start coming back.

The Sepoy Mutiny

The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began as a mutiny of sepoys of the British East India Company's army on 10 May, 1857, in the town of Meerut, and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northernMadhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to Company power in that region, and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also known as India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Mutiny, the Revolt of 1857, the Uprising of 1857and the Sepoy Mutiny.

1900 Galveston Hurricane

The Hurricane of 1900 made landfall on the city of Galveston in the U.S. state of Texas, on September 8, 1900. It had estimated winds of 135 miles per hour at landfall, making it a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. The hurricane killed many with an estimated death toll between 6,000 and 12,000 individuals. The hurricane occurred before the practice of assigning official code names to tropical storms was instituted, and thus it is commonly referred to under a variety of descriptive names. Typical names for the storm include the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, the Great Galveston Hurricane, and, especially in older documents, the Galveston Flood. It is often referred to by Galveston locals as The Great Storm or The 1900 Storm.

Is the United States Imperialistic?

Is or have the United States Imperialistic?

                        Pro
  • America’s “New Imperialism” is much softer and is more interested in maintaining global trade.
  • This soft imperialism benefits the world much more than the traditional hard imperialism of a century .
  • What seems to rile the world large and small is that we have the capability to act imperialistic at any time we choose.

                       Con
  • We are not imperialistic like in the 19th century way of colonizing and dominating.
  • We have the capability to be an Imperialistic nation. But by historical measures, we’re Imperialistic underachievers
  • To ourselves, we are just plain old America, which is anti-imperialistic.

U.S Current Cartoon

The idea of this picture is than the U.S was protecting everyone in that was under the eagle's wings in 1898. In turn for protection the countries supported the U.S in any way we asked. The eagle is becoming tired from spreading its wings father and father to protect more countries.

Political Cartoon #2

This picture represents how the Europeans took advantage of the Africans and used them for their own personal gain. As you can see the natives are supporting the Europeans and they have no choice.
My response to this is that it is wrong. If the Europeans need the resources that bad then they should do it themselves, not be lazy and make someone else do it for them. They could have even traded with the Africans  for what they needed rather than dividing up the continent.

Political Cartoon #1

In this cartoon the European powers are all fighting for a piece of Africa. They are literally pulling Africa apart.
I don't think they should be doing this. They were doing just fine without using Africa for resources.

Essential Question

My Essential Question is who was the most Imperialistic country?
The answer to my question is Great Britain. Great Britain had their hand in almost every country forming colonies. One famous quote from this period was " The sun never sets on the British Empire."
This quote means that the British had so much land that it was always daytime in some part of the British Empire.

Unit Objective

I want to know who the best Imperialistic country was. I also want to know why Imperialism was necessary for countries that were already doing well.

Introduction to Imperialism

This is Chapter 26 which deals only with New Imperialism. Imperialism is a larger country taking over a smaller one for production reasons. The largest Imperialistic country of this time was Great Britain. Imperialism could have brought about one world wide empire or it could have set the world on fire.
